BESS Project Manager (Senior)
Taylor Hopkinson is partnering with a global energy storage investor, developer, and owner-operator with a 5GW pipeline and over 1GWh in construction. They are seeking a skilled BESS Project Manager, based in the UK, Switzerland, Spain, or other locations in Europe, to lead multi-hundred-million-pound projects from pre-RTB to COD.
Job Overview: We are seeking an exceptional BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Project Manager with a proven track record in large-scale project delivery. The successful candidate will manage high-capacity BESS projects from pre-RTB (Ready to Build) to Commercial Operation Date (COD). The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, capable of working autonomously yet lead project people, and skilled at influencing stakeholders to achieve project objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Delivery Management:
- Lead and manage the large-scale BESS projects from pre-RTB through to COD.
- Drive project execution, ensuring all aspects of the project are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Develop detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets, tracking progress against milestones and adjusting as necessary to keep the project on track.
- Project Integration and De-Risking:
- Oversee the integration of BESS technology into existing infrastructure, ensuring seamless operation and compliance with technical specifications.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate risks throughout the project lifecycle, implementing strategies to de-risk the project and ensure successful delivery.
- Work closely with engineers, contractors, and suppliers to address technical challenges and optimize project execution.
- Stakeholder Management and Influence:
- Act as the primary point of contact for all project stakeholders, including investors, partners, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
- Influence and lead stakeholders without direct reporting authority, ensuring alignment and collaboration towards project goals.
- Negotiate and manage contracts with vendors, suppliers, and contractors, ensuring favorable terms and conditions.
- Economic Analysis and Financial Oversight:
- Oversee economic analyses of the projects, including financial modeling and cost-benefit assessments.
- Monitor project budgets, forecast expenditures, and manage financial performance to meet or exceed financial targets.
- Provide regular financial and progress reports to senior management and stakeholders.
- Leadership and Collaboration:
- Lead the project teams by example, working closely with all partners to ensure a cohesive and collaborative approach to project delivery.
- Foster a culture of teamwork and shared success, motivating all parties to contribute to the successful delivery of the projects.
- Drive projects forward with determination, pulling them from the horns to overcome challenges and achieve project milestones.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, Project Management, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., PMP, Prince2) are advantageous.
- Experience:
- 7-15 years of experience in managing large-scale infrastructure or energy projects, with a proven track record of delivering projects from pre-RTB to COD.
- Experience managing projects with significant CAPEX investments, ideally in the renewable energy sector.
- While BESS-specific experience is not mandatory, a strong background in complex project delivery is essential.
- Technical and Analytical Skills:
- Strong mathematical skills and understanding of project economics, including financial modeling and analysis.
- Proficiency in project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera) and financial analysis tools.
- Ability to understand and navigate technical challenges, working closely with engineering teams to deliver solutions.
- Language Skills:
- Fluency in English.
- Proficiency in German, Italian, or another European language is an advantage.
